Cosmic Calendar

Month of May, 2011

The first few days of May are vibrating with the possibilities of initiation into a new reality by way of bold and radical attention/intention and action for each of us individually and all of us collectively. Pray, meditate and focus clearly on the most positive outcomes, totally engaging heart and soul in your daily dance with the living field. May begins in the darkest of the Dark Moon phase, the 1st and 2nd, where we're still releasing and clearing away old mental, emotional and physical debris, finishing up the work of the cycle that's ending. The fires of purification and creation are still burning hot with Uranus, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Eris all in Aries.  Jupiter, Mars and Eris align in a potent triad at the same degree for unprecedented opportunities to reverse the course of personal, social and environmental destruction and mayhem. (Sedgwick) This is does not all happen at once, of course, but now is the time for a significantly energized new beginning. Saturn opposes the Aries planets to keep us on a socially responsible track, reining in the inner warrior just enough to prevent us from going too far in the wrong direction in rebellion. The Aries line up also brings out the maniacally arrogant among us to expose a pathological world view we can no longer afford to enable, cultivate or tolerate. Witness Donald Trump as one prime example, a would-be presidential candidate, in a recent declaration of how proud he is of himself of forcing a sitting president to publish his birth certificate! And then the arrogance of that same sitting president to be promoting the building of many new nuclear power plants in the midst of the worst nuclear/environmental catastrophe in history! Such out of control hubris will be their undoing, or our collective undoing, if we don't just say no to it all in some ways through our daily business.

Cross quarter day, May 1, is the halfway mark between equinox and solstice, one of the 8 fire festivals of the yearly round where many ancient cultures and indigenous people celebrate(d) the sacred turning points in the seasonal cycles. This year is an especially intense May Day, or Beltane as the Celts called it, as we vibrate between the worlds while needing to make a move further into the new world. With May Day in the depths of Dark Moon this year we may be wisest to fully embrace the shadow within ourselves in order to process the collective shadow that's over-taking us in present time worldwide crises. Adding to this is Ceres, grain goddess and mother of Persephone who was abducted by Pluto, god of the underworld, at the mid-degree of Pisces. She's mourning the state of the world's children and of global food production/distribution, and in this coming lunation is in dynamic aspect to Pluto, Sun, Moon and Saturn signaling it's time to attend to the needs of the most vulnerable among us. In mythology this is the time of year Ceres (or Demeter) gets her daughter back and in celebration allows the crops to grow and flourish until Persephone must return to the underworld as queen of the dead. The themes of providing or withholding nourishment, grieving the loss of innocence, negotiating agreements that are fair to all, finding the role that suits our purpose, are certainly relevant to all of us in this time.

New Moon at 13 degrees Taurus at 11:51 pm PDT on the 2nd begins the new lunar cycle immersed in the exquisite gifts of the Mother, but also reminded of our own negative impact on our planet. There are 60 miles of atmosphere between the surface of the Earth and the unimaginable vastness of space, so fragile, yet so miraculous. How can we think we could possibly get away with messing with our own habitat so destructively? No self-respecting "lower" life form would be crazy enough to do that! We're faced with issues around money (distribution, management/mismanagement and hoarding of resources), individual and shared value systems, and Gaia's riches being mindlessly plundered. Environmental disaster and wars are the state of our shared world from here on 'til we change from the path of devastation to the path of sustainability and social justice for all; 'til enough of us shift from duality consciousness to unity. Do not be fooled though that small, everyday actions have no affect. This lunation with Sun and Moon trine regenerator Pluto and Juno, the partnership asteroid, lends great power to any actions we take asserting our commitment to healthy sustainability. This reverberates in our personal realm as well as in the global community. There are 9 planets and asteroids between 11-16 degrees of 6 signs ( Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Virgo and Libra) right now, emphasizing the mid-degrees of every sign in the zodiac. If you have planets or points in the mid-degree range this New Moon impacts you more personally with the need to get grounded, balanced, harmonized, with the environment and with relevant groups, while clarifying relationships and intentions. "A porter carrying a mountain of heavy baggage." Sabian Symbol for 13 Taurus from L. Hill conjures images of taking on other people's burdens and also hints of class issues; providing service that can both relieve those who are over-burdened and enable those who expect others to carry their burdens for them. It's clear the message is about consciously taking on problems rather than burning ourselves out with unnecessary responsibilities in order to function effectively, using our resources wisely.

Mercury and Venus are traveling closely together for most of this month, first in firey, individuating Aries, and then by the 15th they both enter earthbound Taurus within a little bit over an hour of each other. This combination plays out quite differently as the shift from fire to earth element occurs. In Aries these 2 facilitate communication through asserting our individual perspectives, needs and desires, but not so much with diplomacy. In Taurus they share a laid back approach of connecting, while being more inclined toward meeting physical needs, financial concerns and using fewer words with more tactile communication. The senses are important aspects of thinking, perceiving and sharing thoughts, feelings, and pleasurable
pursuits from mid-month 'til the end of May.

Full Moon on the 17th at 27 degrees Scorpio, Sun opposing in Taurus, perfects at 4:09 am PDT, highlighting once again our values and where they've brought us. Jupiter in late Aries conjuncts Venus, Mercury and Mars in early Taurus, bringing much of the spirited, firey energies of this spring into the realm of earthly manifestation. Mercury has re-crossed its retrograde degree on the 11th, increasing mental clarity, ready to make further decisions on how to proceed. At this Scorpio Full Moon, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Mars all together in Venus-ruled Taurus conspire to illuminate the right uses of what resources we have, while also promoting the immeasurable delights of being in the moment, appreciating where we are, who we're with and what we're experiencing. Venus, Mercury, Mars trine dedicated Pluto, ruler of the lunation, continue to ensure all efforts at sustainability and restoration of what's been spoiled, no matter how small, will be effective. We're more relaxed in relationships with the slower pace, but beware the Taurean tendency for obstinacy. Sabian Symbol from Rudhyar  for 27 Scorpio reads: "A military band marches noisily on through the city streets. The aggressive glorification of cultural values." Rudhyar goes to say: "Our aggressive, tense, domineering Western culture is indeed in opposition to the natural spontaneity and instinctive adjustment to nature of tribal societies." This lunation can emphasize the excessiveness and futility of our traditional national persona, as well as act as a personal wake up call to each of us, especially those with planets and cardinal points in late degrees of fixed signs (Taurus, Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo). We're all being called on to abandon that which drains our energies and resources, as much as we can manage in present time, and nourish ourselves and our communities with work that comes from the heart.
